7 BEST PODCAST HOSTING PLATFORMS (+ FREE OPTIONS)

best podcast hosting platforms

So, you started your own podcast or you’re thinking of starting one.

First of all, congratulations! Having a podcast is one of the best ways to deliver enjoyable AND relevant content in 2019.

It’s a rapidly growing industry with more and more people coming in.

With that said, if you want to succeed as a podcaster, you need to make your content discoverable and expose it to as many people as possible in your space -pretty obvious, right?-

To do so, we all know that you need to publish your content in podcast directories such as iTunes or Spotify.

podcast directories

However, to publish them, you first need to store your podcast episodes in platforms that are specially engineered to host this type of content.

These platforms are called Podcast Hosting Platforms and this is where you will upload all your podcast episodes and information that’s displayed in platform directories. We’ll get to them more in detail later.

The only thing you need to know is that choosing the right podcast hosting platform, one that actually suits your needs and budget is CRUCIAL for your podcast success.

That’s because you will avoid a lot of problems along the road, allowing you to focus on the most important aspect of a podcast: producing high-quality and valuable podcast episodes.

The problem with choosing the right podcast hosting is that there are just too many options on the market and they all seem to have the same features.

podcast hosting platforms

It can quickly become a frustrating and very time-consuming task.

Lucky for you, in this article we go over our top picks for the best podcast hosting platforms in the market.

To make this review as complete as possible, we took into account several aspects such as price, storage capacity, usability, app integrations, and much more.

Keep in mind that the “perfect” hosting doesn’t exist. Every podcaster has different needs (and, of course, budgets).

Regardless, we hope to make your decision process easier and help you find the right podcast hosting for YOUR situation.

We have a lot to cover, so let’s dive in!

Podcast Hosting Platforms 101

how podcast hosting works

What is it?

To make it simple, a podcast hosting is the middleman between your podcast episodes and your listeners. This is where you’re going to store all your podcast’s audio files and any other information that’s displayed (description, visuals, etc.) on the podcasting platforms.

What do they do, exactly? Once you upload your audio files and all their information to the podcast hosting platform, it creates a podcast RSS feed that you will then submit to the podcast directories of your choice.

So, when you upload a new podcast episode, it’s directly delivered to your listener’s podcast platform (iTunes, Spotify, TuneIn…)

buzzsprout-podcast-directories

For example, Buzzsprout allows you to list your podcast on all major podcast directories

The best hosting providers come with more features such as advanced analytics, social sharing options, app integrations, and many others that can significantly help you grow your podcast.

Remember, podcast hosting platforms are not the same thing as podcast directories!

Why should I use it?

Podcast hostings platforms are NOT classic web hostings that decided to change their name for marketing purposes.

They were specially engineered to provide the best tools to grow your podcast and make the most out of it.

There are numerous benefits of having a podcast hosting. Here’s a list of the most important ones:

  • By having a podcast hosting, you won’t deteriorate your podcast’s quality. When you host your podcast on platforms that are not meant to host this type of content (such as your website), your podcast quality takes a toll. For more info about this, check out the section Why you shouldn’t post your podcast on your website?
  • Podcast hostings save you money. Yes, you heard that right. If you choose to host your podcast on your website, you may end up paying a big -very big- bill. Why? Some hosting providers don’t come with unlimited bandwidth. And, when you upload a podcast episode, it does take a lot of space and you can easily surpass your host’s storage space limit which means you will need to pay more at the end of the month for that extra storage. Believe or not, this problem happened to me once and I had to pay an extra $60 at the end of the month for hosting services (It ruined my entire week for sure).
  • Podcast hostings come with powerful analytics. This is extremely important because you get to know what episodes perform the best as well as important information about listeners. You will then be able to adapt your content in order to get the best results possible.

buzzsprout analytics

  • Lastly, podcast hosting providers come with extra security for your podcast. No one wants their business to be ruined by a hacker. That’s why it’s extremely important that you take measures to prevent that. Podcast hostings come with built-in security and back-up systems so you don’t have to worry about your podcast being cyber hacked.

What are Podcast Directories?

Podcast directories are platforms that read your podcast’s RSS feed.

In other words, they receive your podcast audio files (and information) from the podcast hosting platforms then they display it on their platforms, allowing you to reach their users.

Therefore, as soon as you upload a new episode to your podcast hosting, podcast directories are capable of detecting it and immediately publishing your new episode on their feed.

My favorite Podcast Directories

As you know, reaching a wider audience should be one of your priorities to make your podcast work.

And, that’s where podcast directories come into play.

Once you’ve produced a high-quality podcast, it’s time to publish your work on podcast directories so people can discover and consume your content.

I made a list of the biggest podcast directories that you should join right now. Let’s get into it!

My Top Pick: iTunes

itunes logo

It shouldn’t surprise you to see iTunes on this list.

iTunes it’s the biggest podcast directory in the space without question.

It has been in the podcasting game since the beginning. So, if you want your podcast to be discovered by most people, you need to list it on Itunes, period.

Why you shouldn’t post your podcast on your website?

It’s pretty common to think that you can host your podcast on your website.

After all, you’re already paying for web hosting and don’t want to pay for another service just to host your podcast episodes, right?

Well, in theory, you’re right.

You can host your podcast on your website. It’s not near a wise decision though.

That’s because hosting your podcast on your website has A LOT of downsides that will negatively impact your podcast -and also website- quality.

Here’s a list of the biggest ones:

  • Podcast requires a lot of storage: If you decide to host your podcast on your website, you need to know that it will slow down your website and prevent your web hosting from working properly: Your web hosting is not made to host big audio files!
  • Data transfer can cost you a lot of money: A lot of web hostings provide unlimited bandwidth such as Bluehost. Unfortunately, not all of them do. Some hosting providers have a limited bandwidth capacity and will charge you more -sometimes a lot more- if you exceed this capacity.
hostgator hosting policies

These are Hostgator Hosting Policies. Uploading podcast to a Hostgator hosted website will most certainly cause problems because it goes against their policies.

  • Slow website speed: A web hosting will never deliver a podcast at the speed that a podcast hosting does, period. That’s because a podcast hosting is specially designed to host podcasts and therefore allow listeners to properly play them, without interruptions or speed issues. In other words, hosting your podcast on your website will kill your podcast by delivering a poor user experience to your listeners. Besides all of that, having a podcast on your website will also slow your website’s load speed. And, especially today, internet users expect websites to load fast!

Our favorite Podcast Hosting Platforms

Don’t have time to read the entire article? No problem!

Here’s a quick summary:

We’ll now go for a more in-depth analysis of each of these podcast hostings as well as other (including free) alternatives. Enjoy!

My Top Pick: Buzzsprout

  • PRICING: $12 EACH MONTH + $20 AMAZON GIFT CARD HERE
  • DO THEY HAVE A FREE PLAN? YES

buzzsprout

Buzzsprout is my favorite podcast hosting on the market without question.

They have been in the podcast hosting space since 2009 and managed to build a very good reputation.

Currently, they host more than 50000 podcast users

Multiple reasons explain their success and reputation among podcasters:

First, let’s start with their interface.

It is one, if not the most intuitive and simple to use interfaces in the game right now.

Uploading and scheduling a new episode is a breeze.

buzzsprout interface

You even have the ability to add chapter markers to your episodes, making your listeners’ experience much more enjoyable.

In addition to that, Buzzsprout comes with advanced podcast statistics, allowing you to see crucial information that will help you track your progress and optimize your content in the long run. You can check, for example:

  • The podcast episodes that performed the best
  • User devices
  • Apps used to listen to your podcast
  • Listener locations

And much more.

Another crucial aspect that makes Buzzsprout stand out amongst the pack is its excellent and well-responsive customer service.

I can’t stress how important customer service is. There’s nothing worse than having a problem and not getting a solution from the company.

Buzzsprout offers a free plan for beginners. It allows you to upload up to 2 hours of content per month but they delete your content after 90 days

For this reason, if you’re a little more advanced, I recommend you to go for a paying plan.

They range from $12 to $24 per month, based on the amount of material you want to upload per month. However, they are hosted forever unlike the free plan.

buzzsprout plans

If you’re serious about your podcast business, it’s worth it.

Plus, there are no contracts involved so you can leave when you want!

Finally, unlike other podcast hostings, Buzzsprout is regularly coming out with new features to improve its platform and make it as complete as possible.

For example, they recently came out with a new update that allows embedding a podcast episode -or a playlist of episodes- into a website. This is awesome for people looking to build a bridge between their different platforms.

Just like Buzzsprout, Blubrry has been in the hosting podcast industry for quite some time. This amazing podcast hosting has everything you need to manage and grow your podcast.

blubrry statistics

Their pricing is also very correct. They base their plans on storage capacity and not hour capacity like other podcast hostings do.

From as little as $12/month you get access to 100MB of storage, unlimited bandwidth, and unlimited downloads.

PodBean

  • PRICING: $14 EACH MONTH + FREE MONTH HERE
  • DO THEY HAVE A FREE PLAN? NO

podbean logoPodbean is one of my favorite podcast hostings, especially for beginners

They have been in the podcast game since 2006 and today they host more than 250000 podcasts worldwide!

They differentiate from the crowd by providing a high-quality podcast along with VERY affordable plans starting at just $14 each month (You can get a FREE month using my code ….)

Each plan comes with a great arsenal of tools to grow and monetize your podcast.

podbean plansFor the most advanced tiers, you get access to interesting features that let you dynamically insert ad campaigns into your podcast episodes to monetize your audience faster and easier.

By the same token, you can also join the Patron program which lets you collect donations from your listeners via in-app and site donation buttons.

Libsyn

  • PRICING: $5 EACH MONTH
  • DO THEY HAVE A FREE PLAN? NO

libsyn logo

Libsyn is an old player in the space. They have been in the podcast industry since 2004 which makes them one of the first podcast hosting providers.

Currently hosting more than 67000 podcasts around the world, Libsyn is the go-to hosting for a growing number of new podcasters around the world.

Besides, Libsyn is home to giants like the Joe Rogan Experience, Fantasy Footballers, The Dollop and many other big podcasts in the game. If you decide to host your podcast on Libsyn, you can be certain it will be in good hands!

Their plans start at $5 with monthly storage of only 50 MB, which is very little for most podcasts. That’s why my recommendation is to start with the $15 plan that comes with 250 MB of upload capacity.

libsyn plans

Just like other podcast hostings, Libsyin provides you with advanced analytics. However, if money is not a big deciding factor, I would opt for other hosting providers such as Bluzzsprout or Podbean.

That’s because Libsyn is a little outdated and doesn’t offer as many advanced features as other platforms on the market do.

Libsyn’s reputation, as well as their affordability, are the reasons why i decided to put them in this list.

Spreaker

  • PRICING: $7 EACH MONTH + FREE MONTH HERE
  • DO THEY HAVE A FREE PLAN? YES

spreaker logo

Besides offering solid podcast hosting services, Spreaker is also known for its Spreaker Studio app, available for both desktop and mobile.

spreaker studio app

This high-quality software lets you record and edit your podcasts on-the-go, directly from their platform. This is especially awesome and convenient for podcasters who like to create spontaneous and improvised content.

Spreaker also has a “One-Click Distribution” feature which lets you export your podcast episodes across all the main podcast directories such as Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

one-click distribution spreaker feature

Their ”Free Speech” plan is really limited with an insignificant 5-hour audio storage and a 15 minutes per live podcast allowance.

You will most certainly need a better plan such as their “Broadcaster” plan which costs $20 per month and comes with 500-hour audio storage and up to 3 hours per live podcast

Their paid plans range from $6 to $45 per month and they all give you amazing podcasting tools such as the ability to customize your RSS feed or monetize your podcast episodes through dynamic ad insertions.

Captivate

  • PRICING: $19 EACH MONTH + 7-DAY TRIAL HERE
  • DO THEY HAVE A FREE PLAN? NO

captivate logo

Even though Captivate is somewhat of a newer player in the space, it still is an excellent option to consider.

That’s because the team behind it, Rebel Base Media, has extensive experience in the podcast field and this experience has helped them build a robust podcast hosting with standout features to take your podcast to a whole new dimension.

captivate features

Their plans start at $19/month and you can host as many podcasts as you like in one account.

And, what I appreciate about Captivate is that all plans have access to the same features. The only variable that changes is the download limit per month.

However, for $19, you get access to 10000 downloads per month, which is more than enough for the vast majority of podcasts.

captivate plans

Captivate’s features are very growth-focused. For example, if you’re looking to build your email list and generate leads, they allow you to place strategic calls to action buttons right into the podcast player.

You can also create an advanced multi-device website with a donation support built-in for your podcast, allowing you to grow your audience AND monetize it at the same time.

Our favorite FREE Podcast Hosting Platforms

If you have a tight budget or you just want to test the waters, this section is perfect for you.

I made a compilation of the best FREE podcast hosting platforms on the market. Since they offer free plans, their features are somewhat limited. However, they are a great alternative for people looking to start out in the podcasting world.

Buzzsprout

I picked Buzzsprout as my favorite podcast hosting platform in the market.

I also choose them as my favorite FREE podcast hosting (Am I obsessed with them?)

That’s because they offer a solid free plan with more features than any other podcast hosting on this list. It comes with a 2 hr upload limit per month, a perfect start for newbies and casual podcasters. The only downside is that your episodes are deleted after 90 days.

Besides that, you also get access to advanced analytics to track your progress and growth and 250GB bandwidth per month, which is surprisingly good for a free plan.

buzzsprout free plan features

Buzzsprout is extremely easy to use. From uploading a new episode to listing it on all major podcast directories, they have crystal clear instructions for almost everything.

itunes podcast

In conclusion, with Buzzsprout’s free plan it is safe to say that you get really good value for your money (and, since you don’t pay anything, you just get the good value)

Anchor

anchor-logo

Anchor is an all-in-on podcast platform where you can create and distribute your podcasts very easily, all in the same place.

It’s a particular podcast hosting provider because, unlike other platforms, they actually offer 100% free hosting. They state on their website that their objective is to democratize audio by making podcasting accessible to anyone. That’s a strong statement that completely differentiate them from the rest.

anchor free hostingAs you may have experienced, free stuff, especially in the internet space, usually comes with a trap or a catch.

When it comes to the podcast hosting market, free plans typically come with limited bandwidth, limited upload capacity, lack of features, or a combination of them.

With Anchor, you get what you’re told. That’s exactly why I love this platform and why I put them on this list.

And, despite the fact of being free, Anchor is a complete platform that comes with features that other hosting platforms charge for.

For example, you get to easily list your podcast episodes on the biggest podcast platforms, including iTunes and Google Podcasts, with just one click!

anchor podcast distribution

You can also make money from your work via their monetization program. You decide what brands to work with, which episodes to monetize, where to place the ads and they handle the rest!

anchor monetization

Anchor is truly a solid hosting overall, speaking as someone who has worked with multiple paid and “reputed” podcast hostings in the past.

If you’re going to take the free podcast route, take a deeper look into what Anchor has to offer, you won’t be disappointed!

Besides being a prominent player in the music/audio streaming world, Soundcloud also offers podcast hosting services.

If you’re a beginner, you can test their free hosting plan that lets you upload up to 3 hours per month.

soundcloud plans

Since Soundcloud is a globally known platform, your new podcast will benefit from its already existing traffic and community

If you have a website or want to promote your podcast, you can use their embed player to share your podcast on any website page you want. In addition to that, you can directly interact with your listeners thanks to the in-track comments.

soundcloud intrack comments

On the other hand, their podcast statistics are, in my opinion, a little incomplete and unreliable

I’m not a big fan of Soundcloud as a podcast hosting platform. I find their free plan to have a lot of limitations. However, I still mention them in this analysis because they are a big name in the industry.

Red Circle

Red Circle launched in 2019 so it is a recent addition to the podcast industry and an innovative one too.

They are a 100% free podcast hosting that focuses on connecting their users to big brands. That way, they can make money from these partnerships, allowing them to offer free hosting.

how does red circle offer free hosting

It also means that it is in their best interest to help your podcast grow and become successful!

One of their main features is the ability to set up cross-promotions with other podcasts. This is an amazing strategy that can give your new podcast a big boost and help reach a larger audience.

red circle community

However, since Red Circle is a new platform, they don’t have a big community behind so it can be difficult to find podcasts to work with.

Anyhow, there are many new things to come for this platform and, if you’re a beginner, it’s a good alternative to start a podcast for free.

Bonus: Must-Have Softwares for Podcasting

In this last part of this article, I made a list of the top software that you should consider to make the most out of your podcast.

They will definitely boost your podcast business in the long run and help you make more money.

Bluehost

bluehostIf you have a podcast, you NEED a website that serves as a landing page for it. Why? Because it will help you promote your podcast more efficiently.

In today’s era, if you have a business, you absolutely need a website, period.

It’s your “digital presentation card” and you shouldn’t neglect it… especially if you want to maximize your revenue!

Now, if you need a website, you need a hosting too, right? I recommend and will ALWAYS recommend Bluehost

It’s the hosting provider I personally use for all my websites because of their reliability and amazing performance.

Besides, Bluehost has very affordable plans. You can get hosting for as little as $3.95 per month using my link here.

bluehost hosting plans

You can check out here my review of the best hosting providers in the market.

GET BLUEHOST HOSTING

Namecheap

namecheap logo

Now that you have your hosting in place, you will also need a domain name.

And, for obvious reasons…it should have the name of your podcast.

I like to get my domain names from Namecheap. It is simple, reliable and cheap.

You can get your domain name at around $9 per year, which is less than what you spend on toilet paper.

GET A NAMECHEAP DOMAIN

Themeforest

You have your website up and running, kudos to you! Now it’s time to make it look presentable

On the internet, appearances do matter.

Think about it.

If you see a spammy website the first thing you would do is leave it, right?

That’s exactly why you need a nice website theme so people feel secure and have a good user experience. They are the base for your website’s design.

I like to get all my website themes from Themeforest, an online marketplace where you can find any theme you want.

themeforest homepage

If you’re not sure what theme to pick, I recommend Megaphone, a beautiful theme specially made for podcasters.

Megaphone has everything you need to make your podcast website look beautiful and attract your reader’s attention.

GET MEGAPHONE THEME

Getresponse

Finally, as you may or may not know, having a proper email list is crucial if you want to monetize your audience.

You should build an email list since day 1. If you don’t, you’re literally leaving money on the table. Email marketing is an old strategy that continues to work EXTREMELY well.

In order to build powerful email marketing campaigns, I like to use GetResponse .

It’s, in my opinion, the best email software in the market.

That’s because they offer the best tools you can get at an affordable price.

You can build email sequences based on your contact’s actions and deliver the right type of message at the right time.

getresponse featuresAgain, I can’t stress enough the power of email marketing. You should always build an email list and use a tool like Getresponse to monetize it!

Final thoughts

The truth is that starting a podcast is a little bit more complicated than it was years ago.

However, now that you know the top podcast hostings in the market, it’s time to take action

At first, it can’t be a little hard to pay for podcast hosting knowing that there are free options on the market.

But, just like anything in life, free things come with a price (unwanted ads on your podcast episodes, limited storage, slow speed, and much more..).

That’s why the first step to take your podcast to the next level and make it enjoyable for your listeners is to get a solid podcast hosting with useful features that really come in handy for your podcast growth.

But, please, before picking one, dig deep into their features and analyze what they have to offer so you can objectively see if it’s going to work for you.

In my case, I didn’t have a clue what podcast was about, but now your blog helped me to understand how this type of media communication works. You really encouraged me to get involved with this whole new world, and due to your advices it would be easier to reach that goal. I really thank you!
